and International Studies Programs. Huntingdon's Public
Affairs Club
(Under construction by Jeremy Lewis; last revised 10 Sep '02.) |
| Students frequently attend the meetings of the
Alabama World Affairs Council (AWAC), featuring leading speakers from both
military and civilian life -- not to mention fine food. (Meetings are held
at the Museum of Fine Arts, or at the Air University at Maxwell AFB.)
AWAC involves much of the Montgomery international elite, including officers
from the Air University and successful business executives with international
interests.
Talks may cover international relations theory (e.g. Joseph Nye of Harvard, 1999) or practice. (For example, an illustrated case in 1999-2000 of a US General employing a multi-national SWAT team to snatch a war criminal from Serbia to put him on trial in the Hague). In February 2001, AWAC hosted Princeton University's sinologist (China Scholar) Gil Rozman. General Cleveland (who runs the programs) was surprised at the numbers of young people in the usually older audience; they were all from Huntingdon's public affairs club. In fact, two present had already travelled abroad, to the Ukraine and Hong Kong. Take the Mulberry St ramp to I-85 North (to Atlanta) for about 5 miles to Exit 6 (231 South); take a right off the exit onto East Blvd, then 2nd Left on Woodmere Blvd; past Sam's Club to Shakespeare (Blount) Park (on your right). In the park, take first left to Museum "Deliveries". Upon entering the building you will find a name badge on left desk and proceed to enjoy the reception from 5:30 pm until 6:15pm when the speech begins in the auditorium. The food and drink is superb, and you will be entertained by a civilized string quartet. I will meet you in the Museum entrance or in the reception crowd. It
finishes promptly at 7:30pm.
