Proposal for Readings Courses for the
School of Professional Studies, Huntingdon College.
by Jeremy Lewis, PhD., 12 Dec. '04.

  • Upper level, B.A. Courses proposed, spring 2005.
  • Similar to regular courses, with main text and anthology, minus any video documentaries, supplemental readings, lectures, guest speakers and field trips, except as noted.
  • Other courses are possible, but these run in parallel with spring residential courses.
  • PSC 306: Public Organizations
  • Attraction: suitable for mid career public & non profit management officers.  Much also applies to business managers.
  • Adaptation: more emphasis on case studies, with slightly less abstract theory.
  • Rationale: SPS students will not have organization theory explained to them in live lectures, but Stillman reader does have good introductory explanations of the readings.
  • PSC 303: International Relations
  • Attractions: suitable for international business managers.
  • What risks are there that your suppliers and buyers abroad will face economic or political change?  Want to understand the war with Iraq or Afghanistan?  The quest for World Peace?  What kinds of government there are around the world?
  • Adaptation: students will be notified of any suitable PBS (APTV) programs on world affairs as they are scheduled.
  • Rationale: SPS students may enjoy alternatives to in-class documentaries or local World Affairs Council speakers.
  • PSC 314: Political Theory and Constitutional Law
  • Attraction: suitable for legal and paralegal professionals; civil rights cases often a general interest area.
  • Adaptation: mostly constitutional history and law.
  • More selections of Curtis theory reader replace Sterba theory reader.
  • Rationale: SPS students will not already have prepared with Curtis readings from other courses.
