  • Lurleen v.shy -- but was pressed to serve as Gov.  Ran 45 days after cancer surgery.
  • Lurleen as Gov still referred to George as Gov.  
  • Liberal policies on parks & mental health.
  • She won maj of black vote as well as white.
  • Wallace machine ruthless and running for President '68.
  • Lurleen died, RFK assass'd

  • Presidential campaign: 
  • polled 23% at peak
  • 10M votes 1968 & 5 Southern states
  • but VP Curtis LeMay cost votes
  • Wallace spoke plainly for poor whites used to losing but liking a fight.
  • Widowed, met Cornelia, niece of Folsom.
  • campaign for Gov '70 
  • Nixon secretly funded via Red Blount the Al Brewer to cost Wallace his base.
  • Nasty campaign of rumors -- gay, black fear, etc.
  • Wallace won. Married Cornelia.
  • She warned him 3d party was a weak crowd & moderated his image.
  • Seymour Tramell coop'd w/Feds on finances -- and Wallace brother Gerry had greatly increased income.
  • Nixon deal: Wallace became Dem and IRS investigation dropped.
  • Assassination attempt:
  • Arthur Bremer loner intended fame by killing Nixon  or Wallace.
  • 1972 Wallace. Carried all FL on anti busing platform.
  • Not shot in March primary because 2 girls were in way. Shot in Laurel MD.
  • Nixon plotted to plant Mcgovern leaflets on Bremer's aprtmt. Unable.
  • Wallace kept campaigning but health problems.
  • Divorce.
  • Repentance?  Campaign four & elected Gov '82
  • apptd record # of blacks to office but resigned early.
  • Much influence on later politics, 3d parties, issues eg welfare reform
