US Air Force Academy Assembly
Since 1998, the college has funded at least
two outstanding students to participate in the Assembly, held in Colorado
Springs every February, for students from fine colleges across the country.
In 1999, Jared Lyles and Chad Hobbs were our delegates; in 2000, Amy Garrett
and Woo-jung Lee participated. In 2001 we sent four: Margaret Enfinger,
Angela Graham Dupree, Matthew Stockman and Steven Greene. We also
sent Carrie McDonough, Larry McLemore, and others. In 2004, Liz Arnett
and R. Walker Garrett participated, in discussions on Global Governance.
You'll discuss a policy topic each year in
roundtables with an expert and a dozen colleagues, mixing cadets from the
service academies with civilians. The days are long, the discussions
are lively, and the guest speakers are top names from politics, diplomacy,
the military and academe.
Here's the link to the USAFA Political
science dept's Assembly web
page. It includes practical details and a bibliography for
the year's topic.

Now -- even if the college can afford to subsidize
you in any particular year -- you'll need to save up a little for the few
remaining meals, entertainment, sightseeing on Saturday, and the drive
to Atlanta airport.
Transport
Don't forget that the drive takes at least 2
hours 30 mins and there's one extra hour for the time difference, plus
allow an hour to slog around the airport before the flight. That
is, leave Montgomery at least 4hrs 30 mins before your flight!!
Delta has a regular service direct
ATL - COS (Colorado Springs). The fare is very reasonable if you
return Sunday.
Returning Sunday, you'll want a late morning
flight because the shuttle from the ASAFA to the airport takes a while
(70 mins?) and is only offered every 2 hours. Therefore, expect to
be back here Sunday late evening.
Skiing?
On Saturday the cadets offer a heavily discounted
trip to a major ski area at 11,000 feet (where oxygen is lighter).
The USAFA rentals are excellent and you can buy a lesson if you wish.
It's a great deal but take $100 for rental, lift ticket, meals and lesson
if you want it.
Sightseeing?
Alternatively, go sightseeing for an afternoon
at the Garden of the Gods park which has gorgeous rock formations
and is close to Colorado Springs. USAFA is located in the foothills
of the Rockies, with spectcular views all round.
What to Expect.
Fly up to the Academy on Tuesday, with an introductory
reception Tuesday evening. Cadets will be in uniform, though civilian
undergrads will be wearing usual student gear. Take warm clothes
and be prepared for snow and high winds.
Expect to be up early for breakfast and a
long bus ride in to the Academy. You'll be discussing issues in the
topical policy in roundtables Wed and Thur, each of 15 students with a
discussion leader. Friday you will be in a major plenary session
negotiating a document.
Evening banquets and major speakers (including
ambassadors, generals and professors) will keep you busy till 8:30pm or
so, and then the cadets will offer you trips to Cowboys dance bar and the
like. You'll have very long days but very stimulating ones.
What to do.
Bring back photos and reports for our web site!
Make friends from other colleges and go look
them up on your next break.
You'll need to read at least one recent book
on the policy topic of the year's conference.
Here's a link to the 1997 Assembly's policy
document on US
China relations. In 1999 we discussed US Latin relations and
in 2000 diversity policy.
Center for Study
of the Presidency, Wash. DC.
This spring annual symposium attracts some 500
students and excellent guest speakers from politics, government and diplomacy.
Held in mid-april, it costs about $250 plus the travel and accommodation.
Note that often the actual speakers may not be the same as the list of
invited speakers, but usually a stellar group. The center offers
a number of essay prizes and gives undergrad Fellowships for research on
the presidency.

(IIMCR)
invites students and young professionals
to the
6th Annual International Student Symposium
on
Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
The Netherlands, July 21st - August 18th,
2001.
The International Student Symposium on
Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
is not
just another academic course. It is a life-changing
experience. A hundred students from
around the world are admitted to participate
in this course in The Hague, The Netherlands
every summer. On average, approximately
40 different countries are represented during
every program, making it the most diverse
academic offering in the world.
After graduation, students are provided with
a weekly analysis of the news, job and
internship updates, information on conferences
and a host of other information through the
IIMCR website
(www.iimcr.org). With the assistance of IIMCR,
course graduates are now using their
conflict resolution skills in Chechnya, Afghanistan,
Kosovo, East Timor, the West Bank,
Colombia, Belgrade, among other locations.
Would you be kind enough to inform your better
students of an opportunity that can catapult
their careers in this discipline. If you
would like any further information, please contact;
Marcel Smits, Executive Director via e-mail:
marcel@iimcr.org.

IIMCR believes that young people can play
an important role in undertaking actions to

countries and in the world. We have
developed an interdisciplinary course grounded
in theory, substance and hands-on
simulation. The course draws heavily from
the tools of practice as taught by scholars and
trainers and on the real-world experiences
of practitioners. Symposium students interact with
a renowned faculty in the form of lectures,
training exercises and simulations. The faculty is
composed of scholars, negotiation and mediation
experts, current and former diplomats and
conflict resolution specialists. Many of
these individuals have participated in resolving some
of the world's most intransigent conflicts.

"Texas A&M University's Memorial Student

hosted the Student Conference on National

internet file sharing issue. We would like to discuss what kind of regulation
is needed and
whose responsibility that will be. The title
is Technology Today: The future at our fingertips. We
would really like to see participants from
your undergraduate program attend our conference. If you would like, you
can visit our webpage at
