The Alabama Capitol

The Alabama Capitol building is at Dexter Avenue and Union Street on Goat Hill. It has a museum and some offices inside.  The Governor works there, but now the House and Senate meet across the road.  You can see lots of pictures on the walls.

2. Governors of Alabama

  • William Wyatt Bibb (D)
  • William Wyatt Bibb was born in Virginia.  He served in the legislature before he became governor of our state.  Bibb was a democrat, and started his term as governor in 1819.  Bibb only served for one year, due to a hard fall off his horse.  He was already very sick with kidney failures and tuberculosis.  Bibb never really recovered from the fall, and spent the last year of his life in constant pain.  He never lived to see Cahaba as the state capital.  Bibb died on July 20, 1820, at the age of thirty-nine.  I believe that Bibb's biggest accomplishment was being the first governor of our state, and being able to get our state organized.

  • Israel Pickens (D)
  • Israel Pickens was born on january 30, 1780.  Later, he became the third governor of Alabama and was inaugurated on November 9, 1821.  when Pickens ran for office again in 1823 he defeated his opponent Dr. Henry Chambers by a vote of 6,942 to 4,604.  Pickens' major accomplishment was being a successful governor.  He was said to be "a man of exceptional capability, vision and compassion."  But he wasn't just good at political affairs.  He was interested in scientific research, and even invented a lunar dial.  Pickens died on April 24, 1827, due to ill health.

  • The executive branch carries out the laws and enforces them.  It is headed by the Governor.
  • The judicial branch judges people for keeping within the law.  It is headed by the Supreme Court.
  • 4.  Current Government Officials

  • Governor Don Siegelman (D)
  • Don Siegelman, a Democrat, is the current Governor of Alabama.  He went to college in Oxford, England.  He was a Rhodes scholar.
